Mentawai people live in the traditional dwelling its called ( uma) which is a longhouse and is made by weaving bamboo strips together to make walls and thatching the roofs with grass, the floor is raised on stilts and is made of wood planks but no any room inside the uma. The main clothing for men is a loin clothing called cubin and they are adorned with necklaces and flowers in their hair as a symbols spirit and ears. Women wear the same thing except they wear a piece of dry banana leafs around the waist. Women wear small sleeveless vests and they sharpen their teeth with a chisel for aesthetic reasons to make their teeth look like a shark's. Tattooing is a symbol the showing some body is sikire. It makes with a needle and wood which is hammered on the needle by a shaman called sikerei. Stay in Uma with doing daily activities with shaman is nice experience on traveling and it's unforgettable moment in the life. beside enjoying their traditional activities such as hunting the pig ( food) also can see how they produce traditional poison who made from plants that grow up surrounded the uma. Come to Pulau Mentawai and feel the glories of nature in the pristine forests and the friendly people who live in them.
